About Juleflet.dk

Juleflet.dk collects templates for woven Christmas hearts so you can print them at 100% size on A4.

In the editor you can draw your own pattern: drag the curves, add strips and download the template as a PDF. Your hearts are saved in your own browser and you can share them with a link.

The site is made by Thomas Ahle. It is open source, and the code is on GitHub under the MIT licence.

The templates were drawn by Thomas Ahle, Amy Young, Niels Thygesen, Torben Ægidius Mogensen, Gerth Stølting Brodal, Bjørn and others – and some are classic patterns with no known author.

How does a motif become a weave?

The cuts follow the outline of the motif. Some form the visible boundary between colours; others coincide in both sheets and disappear in the weave.

A star in a circleThe woven heart and the cuts that create the motif

A star in a circle

The star’s outline is divided between the two sheets. Shared cuts connect it to the frame.

A hole need not be a cut-outThe woven heart and the cuts that create the motif

A hole need not be a cut-out

Both circles can be made by weaving. The paper stays connected because the cuts continue to the edge.

Two separate figuresThe woven heart and the cuts that create the motif

Two separate figures

Even figures that look separate can remain connected in the paper template. A shared connection is hidden between the colours.

Blue: cuts in one sheet. Green: cuts in the other. Orange: shared cuts.

A drawing of the cuts does not tell the whole story: there must also be room to cut and to pass the strips through one another. These constructions have been checked digitally; they have not all been assembled in paper.
